The War of 1812 was considered to be Americas first Revolution. It is to be said that before the War of 1812 America was never free. During the War of 1812 the United States took on Great Britain who was the greatest naval power in the world. In November President James Madison had blocked all trade with Britain. Soon after this the United States had lost many costly defeats over the course of the War of 1812. The British had captured and burned the nations capitol, Washington D.C., in August 1814. Dolly Madison claimed fame for saving the portrait of George Washington before the flames engulfed the White House. Soon the Nations Capitol which took ten years to build took the British no time at all to burn Washington D.C. to the ground.
